Fallen SAF trooper in Aurora remembered after 40 days

by Bagong Aurora Website ng Bayan

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASAN LUIS, Aurora — A simple candle-lighting ceremony here marked the commemoration of the 40th death day of PO2 Nicky “Dondon” Nacino Jr., one of the 44 members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Special Action Forces (SAF) who were killed in an encounter with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Bangsa Moro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, on Jan. 25, 2015.

Relatives, friends, barangay officials and townmates, most of them wearing white shirts with in prints “Justice for Dondon Nacino,” at the front and “We Miss You, Dondon” at the back joined the candle-lighting event.

They expressed hope that justice will be given to the fallen SAF members the soonest possible time.

Nacino’s mother Catherine was hoping for the fulfillment of financial support since his slain son was the sole breadwinner in the family.

The slain cop, the eldest in a brood of six, was the one financing the studies of his siblings Geraldine, a criminology student at the University of Baguio and Ricky Boy, a finance management student at the Saint Louis University in Baguio City.

She said that there are those who already gave assistance to their family with the latest from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 3 which promised to help Ricky Boy to pursue his studies at Saint Louis University.

Nacino’s wife, Roselle, in a telephone interview, said that being a member of Iglesia Ni Cristo, they do not have a 40-day tradition like the Roman Catholic.

She said they instead celebrated the three- month old birthday of their son– Natal Iñigo.

”I am back here in my hometown in Santa Rosa, Laguna and celebrated the birthday of my newborn child Natal Iñigo. It is our tradition with my late husband Dondon,” she said.

She echoed her mother-in-law’s sentiments toward the government’s promise to give assistance such as cash, incentives, scholarship grants, among others.

Relative to this, Ditumabo barangay Captain Christopher A. Marzan, in an interview, said that Nacino’s resting place was transferred from the second layer of his late grandfather’s grave last February 24 to the relocation site in the left line of the barangay cemetery waiting shed, which is the designated place for the “Libingan ng mga Bayani”.

Marzan said the move is in pursuant of the Sangguniang Barangay’s resolution number 05-2015 which was passed to give honor to the slain lawman for his bravery.

“The hero and servant of the barangay will be given 1.5 meters to 2 meters in the cemetery of heroes,” Marzan said, adding that a monument with 2X2 square meters in memory for Nacino will soon to rise in front of the barangay hall by virtue of Sangguniang Barangay resolution no. 13-2015.

Nacino was one of three fallen SAF troopers from Central Luzon. The two others were PO3 John Lloyd Rebamonte Sumbilla of Bataan and PO2 Junrel Narvas Kibete of Bulacan.

He was veteran of the Zamboanga siege where he led police commandos repel 253 members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) who tried to take over Zamboanga City on September 9, 2013. (Jason de Asis)
